The Diploma in Electrical Engineering at Kyambogo University is a two years evening programme, equivalent to four(4) semesters for all entrants. Each semester in an academic year consists of seventeen (17) weeks; fifteen (15) weeks of teaching and two (2) weeks of examination. In addition, in each academic year up to the second year, there is Industrial Training during the Recess Period of 10 weeks.
The diploma in Electrical Engineering provides knowledge and skills in electrical installation, electronics, instrumentation, mechanics, engineering mathematics, programming etc.
Engineering technicians in electrical have to provide solutions to the day-to-day electrical engineering problems. Since this requires planning, installation, operation and maintenance of the necessary electrical units and systems, provision of electrical engineering services, and interaction with society; the study of electrical engineering is therefore necessary. In order for engineering technicians in electrical to provide a good service to the people, this programme reflects the need to combine the understanding of engineering principles with the application of these principles to finding solutions to practical problems.
This is augmented by application skills for managing people and resources, an awareness of the broad business context and recognition of responsibilities and commitment of these technicians to society.
Programme in brief
Students study all the essential elements of electrical engineering.
In year one, you will cover basic science, engineering mathematics, engineering drawing, electrical drawing, electrical measurements and instrumentation, electronics and power systems.
In year two you will concentrate on production engineering, electrical power generation, control systems, electrical installation, mechanical workshop practice and power systems. In many of the modules, you will have hands on in laboratories and workshops learning through experience. In the final year, you will have an opportunity to participate in a group engineering project.
You will also undergo industrial training during the recess term at the end of first year. During industrial training, you will be attached to an industry and you will be able to relate the knowledge and skills obtained from the lecture rooms, laboratories and workshops to what happens in the field.
